Support for Women
Big feelings in a time of big changes.
Perinatal distress, which can include antenatal (during pregnancy) and postnatal (after birth) experiences may occur anytime from pregnancy through to when pēpi/baby turns two. Our free counselling service supports mothers and whānau through this journey with care and confidentiality. We provide up to 10 free counselling sessions (with extensions available if needed) for mums experiencing mild to moderate perinatal distress, including low mood, depression and/or anxiety.
Sessions can take place:
• In your home (within our service area)
• Online or by phone
• At our Nelson office if you live rurally
Our volunteer kaimahi/counsellors are trained or currently completing their counselling studies at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT) and Bethlehem Tertiary Institute (BTI). They offer a safe space to share your antenatal or postnatal experiences and talk through challenges.Alongside our own service, we also provide referrals to low-cost counselling. Contact us to find out more about the support we provide. We have connections with other agencies and organisations within the Nelson/Tasman region that welcome our referrals, when extra support for Whānau is needed.

Therapeutic Group
Good Grief I'm a Mum
Motherhood can stir up old wounds, unexpected grief, and profound transformation. This group honours that complexity and offers a space to be held, seen, and supported. Whether you're a first-time mum or deep in the juggle of multiple tamariki/children under two. Good Grief I’m a Mum is a free, confidential therapeutic group designed just for you. Facilitated by a qualified counsellor, it offers a warm, supportive space to explore the emotional layers of motherhood, its joys, challenges, and complexities.
Over eight weeks together, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the legacy of motherhood and gently unpack themes such as culture, intergenerational patterns, relationships, attachment styles, trauma, the brain, implicit memory, historical trauma, nonviolent communication, the nervous system, including polyvagal theory and co-regulation, and right-brain relational practices that foster safety and healing.
Our groups run for 8 weeks each term, Tuesday mornings for 2 hours. Complete the [Referral Form] to register your place or be added to the wait list.
